The MED Directive (96/98 / EC) was established in December 1996 with the aim of harmonizing between all the Member States of the European Community, the procedures of conformity assessment related to equipment intended to be installed on board of Community vessels.

Applies to passenger ships and cargo falling within the scope of international conventions, mainly the ships are used for commercial purposes, excluding military vessels, pleasure craft and fishing.

The equipment to take on board these means of transport and contemplated in Annex A.1 of the MED Directive, must bear the marking so-called 'Wheelmark'.
